Device handled as limited data link via designated gateway
Hey everyone, I've just begun using a Samsung Galaxy A35. My network setup includes an ASUS RT-AXE7800 acting as the AIMesh router in AP mode and an ASUS AX-55 in AiMesh node mode. These devices are linked via Ethernet and connected to an older Dell tower that functions as an OPNsense box. I've observed that my phone only responds properly when it connects to a Wi-Fi network managed by the AXE7800. On those connections, it appears as though it's in a metered or low-data state. This happens exclusively with this particular phone and router combo. The phone fails to receive push notifications until it wakes up from idle, and many apps don't load correctly. It sits idle for hours without any activity. Once I unlock the phone, notifications appear immediately. When opening apps, content often doesn't load—X loads messages but not photos, videos, or PFP unless the screen stays awake a bit. In Resideo, I can enter my passcode to unlock the app, but the media fails to load and I get a timeout error.
Troubleshooting notes:
- Disabling Wi-Fi and switching back to mobile works instantly.
- Connecting to another Wi-Fi (like in a library) restores normal function.
- Factory resets for both access points, the OPNsense router, and the phone didn't fix the issue.
- Removing the AXE7800 AP from the mix and using only the AX-55 AP resolved everything.
- Using the AXE7800 on Wi-Fi 4, 5, or 6 networks helped, but not consistently.
- I've tried setting the phone to treat the network as "Not Metered," though this hasn't solved the problem.
I've reached out to Samsung and ASUS, but they haven't identified the root cause. All devices are up to date with the latest OS and firmware.
Thank you for your feedback. I've tested the AXE7800 in Access Point mode without any additional APs, including the AX-55. The same problems persist. The phone functions properly when linked to the AX-55 (non-Mesh mode), but other APs and Wi-Fi connections elsewhere in my home are not working.
It seems there might be a faulty AXE7800 or an unresolved setting issue. Consider returning the device to your retailer, as it appears to be a new unit, or submit a warranty request with ASUS. Good luck! Also, verify that both APs are running the latest firmware—reflashing if needed could resolve the problem.
After resetting the factory, confirmed via the web interface that the firmware is fully current
