My setup keeps working until I try to restart it, then it freezes with a RAM warning or stays on the orange LED on my ASUS motherboard. Turning it off and back on fixes it, but only when I press the restart button does it stop. I ran some memory tests on an older 86 series machine and saw no issues, and I also performed several system repairs. Specs include an i7-12700K, ASUS Z690, Prim CORSEL, DDR5 RAM at 5600MHz, RTX 3080, and a 850W power supply.

Consider using an old or faulty CMOS battery. Have a multimeter ready. Remove the battery and check its voltage. Ensure the system is powered down and disconnect the power supply from the wall when working inside the enclosure. Always wear protective gloves. (Thin medical-grade ones work best) Remember to reconfigure your BIOS once the battery is reinstalled.

I wasn't expecting it to be a CMOS issue at all

The likelihood of the battery failing on a z690 board is low, the board is brand new, and CR2032 cells typically last between a few years to over five.

When CMOS becomes unreliable, MB loses two configurations – RAM and CPU – meaning these must be removed from consideration before proceeding.
