I noticed the cracked screen and swapped it out. The battery stopped charging and made a squeaking sound, which I initially thought was a hard drive issue but it wasn't. The CPU fan didn’t spin, so I cut the blue wire to get it working again—including replacing the CR2032 battery on the motherboard. I watched YouTube tutorials for this model and tried various fixes like using an HDMI cable on a TV, but nothing displayed. The motherboard is responding to the keyboard since I can press the CapLock key. I have two options: Amazon lists the motherboard between $129 and $198, while eBay has it for $55 to $98 (open box). Damaged Screen – replaced with a new one; Damaged Battery – swapped in a new CR2032 battery. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Just because the fan doesn't spin doesn't mean you need to cut the PWM signal cable. It may run at full speed all the time, so if you can't solder the wire back together and add a cable sleeve, it might be time to buy a new fan. This usually means the IO chip on the board isn't working properly. Don't worry about other things—just check your diagnosis carefully. If you really need something, consider getting the cheapest working motherboard available on eBay for that project.

The teacher mentioned the screen was broken, so I swapped it out. After turning it on, the display showed nothing, but once I connected the AC adapter it still didn’t function properly—I just plugged in the right one. Could you try another approach to improve your troubleshooting? It seems YouTube might not be the most helpful for someone just starting out.

Begin by ensuring the device powers on correctly. A simple test is to observe the disk activity light; steady illumination suggests the system is booting. If no lights appear, connect the unit to an external monitor and verify any output. Lack of POST indication points to potential RAM issues—remove, reinstall, or replace RAM if necessary. Look for fault codes on the display; some laptops use light patterns or colored LEDs to signal problems. When physical components aren’t available, rely on online guidance rather than making assumptions. Consult forums for advice instead of following random YouTube tutorials, especially when dealing with fan connections.

She asked if I could fix her laptop, an Asus X200M Netbook. She mentioned the screen was broken so I swapped it out. The battery stopped charging, so I cut the blue wire to let it spin now. I learned from YouTube that CPU fans shouldn’t run fast, so I checked the fan speed after cutting. I changed the CR2032 battery on the motherboard. I searched YouTube for troubleshooting tips and tried different methods—using an HDMI cable on TV, especially the static method (30s, 1min, 2min)—but nothing appeared. The keyboard still responds when I press the CapLock key. You have two options: Amazon lists the motherboard between $129 and $198, while eBay has it for $55 to $98 (open box). Any further advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have details on this specific model, but it seems the GPU might be faulty or has been removed. If it's a modular unit, the CPU could be damaged, requiring replacement. For severe issues affecting both screen and iGPU, the motherboard might also be compromised. Updated June 19, 2022 by An0maly_76 Added more info

She mentioned her husband has bipolar disorder and spends a lot of time on the computer, suggesting he might have caused the laptop damage. I also have the old and new pictures.

Uh, yeah, quite likely. I'm not a violent person towards people, but I have been known to "decommission" stubborn devices that refused to behave. When I drove tractor-trailers, I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 that met its end beneath the steer tires of a Freightliner Cascadia. I didn't just run it over, I calmly took the battery out, slowly rolled the left front tire onto it and ran the steering lock-to-lock for several minutes until I was confident it was a fine dust. Kind of like Snowman's revenge on the bikers in "Smokey And The Bandit", because this thing was neurotic to say the least. Th is was when I was on Straight Talk and there was no insurance on it anyway, and alternate replacements were cheap. I have since discovered I am autistic and have a lot of trouble typing, particularly with touch screen devices, because apparently what my eyes tell my brain where my fingers are doing and where they actually are, are two different things. Could have been a factor, but I'm quite convinced that phone just was defective. The early Samsung Galaxy S series left something to be desired in the quality department. The laptop screen functions with HDMI 2 but not HDMI 1. Are there alternative methods to display the screen?
