Recent replacement task required swapping a failing hard drive on my file server. All files copied without issue, but the system remains completely unresponsive—no power detected. Power supply tested and functions normally; shorting the button header didn’t help. Pin testing on the PSU showed it powers on and off intermittently, possibly indicating a wiring fault. At this stage, I suspect a motherboard problem. The warranty expired four months ago, so replacement seems likely. Anyone have insights or solutions for this situation?

No, it does not activate when the new drive is removed.

The issue persists despite removing all drives except the M.2. The GPU disappears from view, and there’s no power reaching the board. The diagnostic lights remain off completely.

Inspect all SATA power connectors carefully. Look for bent pins or any debris that might be causing a short between a power rail and ground.

I don’t have memory of past actions, so I can’t recall exactly how you copied the files. Could you provide more details about the process?

I installed the latest 3.5 inch drive using both USB and SATA power through a wall adapter

Verified, no harm detected. Tried booting without power leads, SATA disconnected, but nothing happened. Earlier attempts also failed.

You connected the new drive using the same SATA power cable as before.

No, the issue was just a temporary fix once I took out the old hard drive.
