Purchased an external hard drive to move data from an old PC to a new one. I'm attempting to transfer large volumes of files, such as my music folder which is 100GB. It launches smoothly, navigates well, and then suddenly the drive vanishes from my PC. When I unplug and plug it back in, it functions correctly. I've already turned off the power-saving mode in the settings. The drive is a Seagate Expansion 2TB model.

Under typical conditions, a portable drive should stay connected unless it’s physically removed. It might be overheating or have a defective controller or USB board. Test it on another machine to check for consistency. If the same issue appears there, the problem likely lies with the drive itself. If not, the fault could be in your computer’s USB ports. I’ve experienced this with certain WD 2.5" drives—some control boards performed poorly, while others functioned correctly when connected directly via SATA Data and Power.

It's a non user serviceable drive. I've tried it on multiple ports. There's nothing large on the other pc to test with unfortunately

Perhaps breaking it down gradually would help. It’s not an ideal answer, but it’s something to consider.

For new purchases that don’t work properly, return them to their original source.

It seems like you're expressing concern about something you'll need to do. What's on your mind?
