I purchased a Tesla P40 from eBay and it functions well with the current configuration: GA-AB350-Gaming 3 (latest BIOS), 16 GB RAM split into three modules (4,4,8 GB), RX 470 graphics card for video output. The Tesla P40 Ryzen 5 1500X works fine. However, running LLMs quickly consumes the available memory. I upgraded to 64 GB RAM (four modules of 16 GB) which fits within the MoBo specifications. Removing the Tesla P40 allows the system to boot normally with 64 GB RAM, though it fails to start when the Tesla is installed. Could you have any suggestions? Is this setup possible with the current MOBO? Also, I’ve ordered an RTX 3090. Anyone has experience with a similar build? Which Mobo model supports this configuration? My old RAM includes two 4 GB modules at 2666 MHz (16-18-18-36, 1.2V) and one 8 GB module at 2400 MHz (16-16-16, 1.2V). The new RAM is four 16 GB modules at 3000 MHz (16-18-18-38, 1.35V).
It makes sense to consider upgrading your CPU. The Zen 1 IMC isn’t powerful enough for 64GB RAM with all the PCIe demands, and an R5 3600 would be a great improvement—my current model performs well under heavy workloads.
The BIOS is current and includes a setting for "Above 4G Decoding."
Yes, as I said - it's the latest BIOS and "Above 4G decoding" is enabled. Without it the PC didn't even boot even with the old RAM and Tesla P40. Yes - I'm thinking about CPU upgrade too. But before I buy a new CPU - I'd like to find out if this MoBo is even viable. I see that the mobo supports a lot more powerful CPUs like: Ryzen 9 5950X or Ryzen 9 3900 .
Did a quick search, I would not recommend that CPU in your board. The 3900 might be fine, but the 5950X is going to be pushing it A LOT, especially if you actually use all those cores. Make sure you have some active air flow over your VRMs and consider a MoBo upgrade alongside the new CPU (unless it is a 3600/5600, even the 3700 or 5700 should be fine on your current board)
A system refresh is also acceptable, though I need something capable of managing 64+ GB of memory and several 24 GB GPUs. It seems my present setup is clearly insufficient. Through trial and error, I discovered the highest stable RAM is 44 GB—comprising two 16 GB modules, a 4 GB card, and an 8 GB module. While not the 64 GB I expected, 44 remains superior to 16. I’m unsure if swapping the 4 GB stick for an 8 GB one would help, but the 3 x 16 GB configuration doesn’t boot at all.
