Hello everyone, I'm working on improving my self-built NAS and have run into an issue. Latest specs: Intel i3-121000F MSI Pro b760-p DDR4 II GTX 980 super (CPU PCIe slot) 2x8 GB 3200 MHz Kingston Fury generic PCIe SATA Controler (chipset PCIe slot) 600W PSU 256 GB NVMe M.2 SSD 128 GB SATA SSD (Boot drive) 2x 500GB HDD 6x 3TB HDD OS: TrueNAS-SCALE 22.12.2 PCIe SATA controler. The problem is that the connected drives don't appear in TrueNAS, Linux Mint 21 xfache Live environment, or Windows 10 installer. They functioned correctly with the same controller in an older system running an AMD A10 in a MSI A-320M-a Pro Max. I've already updated the BIOS to 7E29v1A1, but that didn't resolve it. I'm still using the same TrueNAS installation from the previous setup. I've tried moving the controller to the CPU PCIe slot, but needed a different GPU because the 980 was too large for the chipset slot. My old GTX 580 had some issues—no display, but the system detected everything via the TruNAS web interface. Setting the controller to Gen2 also didn't help.

Check if you've changed the device to another port. Also, see if you can adjust the slot's PCIe version to Gen 2, which matches what was used before. The card might struggle to agree on the right PCIe standard when left in auto mode.

The card is linked via PCI_E2, which supports Gen3 but cannot be changed. Attaching it to PCI_E1 isn't feasible due to GPU constraints. I'll attempt it with the GTX580, though it may take some time.

I used it with the GTX580 connected via PCI_E3 and the Controler on PCI_E1 set to gen2, but it still didn’t work.

The optimal approach seems to be replacing the CPU with one that includes built-in graphics. Another possibility is buying a few bigger HDDs and eliminating the SATA card completely. Your current configuration likely faces a constraint due to the limited number of PCIe lanes from the low-end Intel processor. You generally can't use both M.2 slots and all SATA ports simultaneously. Good luck!

Test it using the SATA card in E3? Besides E1 connected to the CPU and E3 handling x4, the remaining slots are x1, which means fewer lanes than the x4 SATA card. The lane count isn't relevant here since, except for the top slot, other slots provide chipset-defined lanes. As far as I know, the lane setup remains consistent across all socket generations, so high-end and low-end CPUs shouldn't differ.

I believe the issue isn't the problem. I took out the M.2 and linked all the drives to a separate controller, which should now be the only component using CPU PCIe lanes. However, it didn’t resolve the matter.

It wasn't specified but it seems like the best option. Another guess could be yes—testing it might work.

CSM is activated. Turning it off leads to system failure and a BIOS reset.
