Backup yoru data, then recovery won't be a issue. Im typing on a m1 mac book pro now. Feels like every other mac, and super fast. Nothing tablet like. I don't see a reason to stay on a slower intel system. Id just wait for a arm imac if I were you. Also I feel like third party software support for intel macs is gonna be dropped fairly fast, just like what they did to PPC, those last gen PPC systems didn't age well.
PPCs struggled with longevity since Apple was the sole user, but they performed adequately for several years in my memory. From that era, no PCs really stood out either. Regarding the recent M1, I remain wary of any new Apple releases, especially software updates. Since Steve Jobs left, the focus has shifted to profit, which feels familiar. For example, Photoshop was problematic on Catalina and hasn’t seen major fixes since then. I won’t try Bin Sur until I’m certain. Many hardware drops over the past decade seemed more like marketing moves than real improvements, which is why I kept my 2011 iMac for years. The Mac Pro from 2009 is still in use by many people today, possibly more than the outdated models. According to friends who own them, they remain solid even now.
