Hello everyone, as the title implies, I'm trying to determine what fits and doesn't fit on this board. It was purchased from a reasonably affordable local second-hand site. Currently it runs an i7-930 with 10GB of 1066 RAM (as I received). The official product page lists the Intel Xenon W3500 Series as compatible, so I ordered a W3580 on eBay. https://www.asus.com/me-en/Motherboards/.../overview/ By opening the specs tab while writing this, I noticed it also supports other server CPUs... https://www.asus.com/me-en/Motherboards/...fications/ The manual available for download contradicts this information. According to the webpage, I can install up to 24GB of RAM (including ECC if the CPU supports it). The PDF states a maximum of 12GB and explicitly says no ECC. I also didn't discover if buffered ECC RAM could be used with this board—it mentions support for un-buffered RAM but nothing else. I found some inexpensive 24GB buffered ECC RAM on the same second-hand platform (he bought it accidentally), but I'm unsure if they'll work here. Memory initially. The release of this board didn't include 4GB sticks, so it's marked for 12GB. Latest CPUs are compatible through BIOS updates. You can review the list here: https://www.asus.com/me-en/Motherboards/...Desk_BIOS/ CPU support list. Yes, unbuffered ECC RAM is supported by compatible CPUs like the W3500. The key point is you'll need UDIMM sticks, just like standard ones, not RDIMM or LR-DIMM.
The ECC RAM is designed for un-buffered operation, not buffered.

The W3500 functions well without ECC if needed. Ensure you use DDR3 1333/1600 memory and keep all modules identical, avoiding any mix-ups.
