I looked for a solution but still found a possible answer. My modem and router are in separate rooms, but I’m planning to install a new computer in the same room. I’m considering using a switch to connect both devices, possibly running just one cable from the ISP router to the switch and then extending it to both devices. Would it be better to use a single cable or run separate ones?

A switch will function properly! If you're aiming for your own network setup, consider getting a router.

Yes, a switch will function properly. Ensure the distance from router to switch is 100 meters or less.

Ensure all necessary parts are ready. This guide suggests tightening the ends if you have the tools available. Mastering this early can be very beneficial.

For a single cable, I wouldn't agree. For several runs inside the house, perhaps. The expense of tools, spools, and time isn't justified anymore today. While I understand it's a useful ability, knowing the precise length of Ethernet cable required is more than enough. It conserves time, money, and reduces the chance of a poor crimp.

I understand he shouldn’t purchase multiple cables right now. These tools will remain useful for many years.

Thanks a lot! It looks like this option is more affordable than the one I was considering from New Egg. Also, does the cable appear to be in good condition? I was hoping for a longer 100-foot cable.
