Hey gamers! I’m setting up my home lab and am considering using Untangle or OPNSense as my primary firewall. I don’t want to purchase another device for installation. I have an old ThinkStation and a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet card, but I’ve run into problems with the WAN connection. Installing OPNSense worked smoothly, assigning interfaces was simple, and the LAN side is fine—but the WAN IP isn’t showing up. No matter how I configure it, the virtual firewall’s WAN interface never gets an IP from my modem. If I connect my regular $40 Netgear router, it works perfectly and receives an IP. I’m planning to perform packet captures on both the router’s WAN side and the virtual firewall’s WAN side to verify everything. Essentially, I’m just trying a sanity check before considering buying a used Netgate box from eBay.
