Hey everyone! I'm a bit new to this, but I've got a pre-built rig with a 3700x and upgraded it to a 5800X3D. I'm trying to keep things cool, especially since the CPU temps are hovering around 47°C when idle and spiking to 90°C under load. I know the 5000 series can handle up to 90°C, but I'm getting close at 90.4°C. I'm thinking about reapplying thermal paste to see if that helps, or maybe switching to a better cooler and leaving the case window open. I've attached the HWiNFO readout from after a R23 Multi test in case it gives any clues. Any advice would be great!

The wraith max was built for CPUs with a power draw of 95W or less. The 5800X3D has a TDP of 105W. First: cooler TDPs aren't the best indicator, so keep what I say with a bit of caution. Second: today's CPUs handle whatever cooling you provide, as long as it's there, they'll just throttle to prevent overheating—this means it should function fine and won't cause major performance drops, though you might lose some speed. I'd suggest a better air cooler, but I don't think it's necessary.

The 5800X3D tends to overheat because of the additional thermal interface (a silicon shim between the cores and IHS). This is likely why AMD stopped allowing overclocking on the chip. It's not related to thermal throttling, so you can leave it alone.

Actually that is way into throttle territory and it's *not* designed this way at all for normal operation... 90c is still safe, but that will not get better over time and it won't operate at maximum/ ideal performance either. It's really easy: you need a better cooler, all the advantages of the 3D vanish when it's throttling. For comparison my 3D has 79c max running cinebench multi it actually is ... it starts throttling at 85c straight... idk why hwinfo64 says "no" thats entirely not correct however, maybe it's an older version

In R23 Multi, the temperature reaches 71 degrees without any fans running on the cooler when using a stock Torrent Compact setup.

But you reside in Antarctica and practice voodoo with thermal paste, it's not justifiable!

It's currently 19 degrees Celsius in your space.
