I own two Dell prebuilt units that were included for free during trades—one an OptiPlex 7040 and another a Precision 3420. The OptiPlex appears to be a 6th generation socket, though it might actually be a 7th generation since the seller mentioned a 7700 chip. If it's indeed 7th gen, will Dell Kaby Lake motherboards support Skylake? Also, what’s the RAM situation for these prebuilt systems? Does anyone have experience with this setup? I’m not planning to add GPUs or use them personally, so I don’t need specific recommendations.

Kaby lake boards are compatible with sky lake boards. For RAM, it's generally safe to use any DDR4 stick.

The Dell Kaby Lake supports Skylake architecture. You can easily install standard RAM from sites like Newegg without needing special options.

Generally, Kaby Lake boards are compatible with Sky Lake CPUs. For RAM, any DDR4 modules should function as well, though I don’t know if there are specific OEM restrictions for this model.
