His XPS 15 has faced some problems lately. He attempted to turn off the built-in GPU, but the display still runs at a very low frame rate (around 30fps or less). In advanced display settings there’s no way to adjust the refresh rate, and the infobox above it just displays an empty placeholder. He’s already tried updating the drivers. The laptop specs are: CPU i9 13900H, GPU RTX 4070, 32GB RAM at 5200MHz, 2TB storage, DDR5.
He might prefer disabling the iGPU so the system can dynamically choose between the two based on the task at hand.
Turning off the built-in GPU isn't advisable because the dGPU goes through the iGPU—it lacks a dedicated route to the screen. On Windows, you can allocate apps to specific GPUs; however, with just one GPU on my laptop it displays only one option, whereas dual cards show Power saving as Intel IGPU and High performance as NVIDIA DGPU. You might also disable Nvidia Optimus in BIOS or within the drivers.
the dell xps lacks a mux switch, meaning the dgpu output must pass through the igpu.
