I’ve noticed Xeon E3 1230 performance in the Dell Optiplex 790, but will any or all Xeon E3 12 series models function similarly? Thanks!

Choose something verified to function. If it performs reliably, it’s safer despite the unusual Xeon and lack of testing.

Usually, if it isn<|pad|>, it won't function properly. This applies especially to IBM and HP setups, and sometimes to Dell as well. The official guides don't always mention it: https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Sha...-guide.pdf (page 12). If your device supports the pin and wattage, trying it shouldn't cause serious issues. The most likely outcome is a POST refusal. I experienced this with an older Precision T3600 model where the chipset didn't recognize the Xeon, causing it to refuse POST.
