I recently swapped the LGA 775 to 771 on my Dell Dimension 9200 and encountered error codes 1,3,4 plus a black screen. I attempted a custom BIOS update for the CPU but failed to load the ROM using MMTool, resulting in the error message: Error Loading Firmware Image (80000001h).

You installed a specific 771 CPU model. This method functions best with 3x and 4x chipset configurations, not the older 9xx series.

That's a 45nm chip, which wouldn't work with 9xx chipsets even if 9xx chipsets supported 771 Xeons (which I can't confirm or deny). Here is a list of all CPUs supported in the P965 chipset. Keep in mind cooling and power delivery, too.
