Hi, I’m upgrading my desktop from an i7-5820k to a xeon 2660v4 for Maya rendering. I purchased the CPU at a great price—73CAD on Amazon—and it arrived via DHL. While unwrapping, I found a deep cut in the bubble wrap and a damaged plastic bag around the CPU. When I opened it, there was a noticeable gash on the heat spreader. I messaged the seller but wondered if this was just cosmetic damage or something more serious, possibly from customs. I’m hoping they’ll handle returns properly and would appreciate any guidance on what to expect. Please find the attached files for reference. Thank you!

The adjustment influences the surface uniformity minimally. It doesn’t seem significant. I’d install it and check if it stabilizes. If it works, skip concerns; otherwise, you might need to smooth it further.

It's near the edge of the chip, and it doesn't seem very deep. It's likely not going to impact cooling much, so I'd just let it run normally.

In theory, increasing the surface area should help cool things down. However, in reality it might work, but it’s probably okay. Use thermal paste and check—if it feels unusual, you definitely have a problem.

The diagram shows the chip components arranged in a tight, forceful installation.

This scenario could be real due to how the spreader is indented. Often the raised section prevents direct contact, but this might already be occurring, making the raising beneficial.

It won't impact performance. The copper might rust, but that shouldn't matter either. Ideally, the seller should accept returns and wrap items better. They seem to expect careless handling during unpacking, like using a knife to open the package quickly.

Thanks, I'll wait for a response from the seller. Right now I don't have the necessary equipment.

It seems you're asking about determining whether something is appropriate or not. Let me know how I can help!
