Even though they told me not to upgrade my i7 2600 to a i7 3770k, I decided to buy a used one. I fixed it myself and am getting it to run at 4.9 ghz on a Hyper 212 Evo Air cooler (Asus P68 Pro Gen 3 motherboard with offset set to auto). It seems stable, around 82 c under prime 95. I’m aiming for 5 ghz but if it fails, no one knows why. Anyone got any suggestions?

ExodusPrime1337 managed to raise his 3770k to 4.8 on water.
Knoxx29 achieved a 5 gigahertz speed on his rig, even with water cooling (4998.83).
Your results may differ, but 4.6 to 4.8 is generally average for air-cooled systems.
82°C feels quite high.
I aim to maintain my CPU around the low 70°C range.

Delidding has only a slight connection to the maximum operating current of the chip. It might not be able to handle more than 4.9. Each chip behaves slightly differently.

It just stopped working around 4.9 ghz. It might not be very consistent at that frequency, but the temperatures remained under 84 on prime95. Since I use my setup for gaming, I doubt it will ever reach those readings except in prime95.

It's not a temporary problem...it's about that particular component.

At the current settings, the performance is stable for both 5 GHz and 4.9 GHz. It seems the issue isn't voltage but the chip's capability to handle the operating frequency for that duration.

I managed to get it working smoothly at version 4.9. It just began functioning properly. I don't know exactly what caused it to start acting right.
