I recently changed the thermal paste on my 5950x and set the CPU to default corespeeds above 4.2 in idle mode, which led to overheating. After a few minutes the temperatures dropped but performance remained high. I’m unsure what caused this issue. Thanks for your help. Model: x570 Asus TUF Wifi CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x GPU: GTX 1060 RAM: G Skill Trident Z Neo 32Gb (2x16Gb) OS: Windows 10

You're seeing elevated temperatures on your Cougar Aqua 240 with Arctic MX-4, even after a restart. The system is warning about high CPU temps, and the fans are running at full speed.

The readings are out of the ordinary. You need to reinsert the cooler and tighten it securely.

I think the pump in that AIO is likely malfunctioning. That should be sufficient to maintain the temperature (40-50°C when running). The best way to confirm is by touching the CPU area while the system is active. If you sense any vibration, the pump is still operational; otherwise, it’s dead.

His readings are definitely too high, but that seems unlikely—hard to drop below 60°C (with normal noise) during idle on a 5950X because the voltage stays so high. In fact, Zen 3 tends to run cooler under light load compared to idle.

40-50C is quite realistic using a 5950X, as most people experience with a 240mm/360mm AIO. They do have a higher idle voltage, but if the chips aren't active they're not using much power. At standby they draw around 30W, which is manageable to keep the chips around 40-50C with an AIO.

In Ryzen Master you'll notice the main core running at 1.4Ghz, a few cores activating at 300Mhz for background work, and a brief spike to 4.7Ghz when PBO is enabled. Overall, it behaves as expected with most cores putting themselves to sleep.

It looks like the pump was the issue after all. The cable from the pump to the motherboard wasn't sending the right temperature data, which prevented it from working. Now it's functioning properly. Thanks for your assistance!
