DDR5 offers higher speeds compared to DDR4.
Obviously I understand the speeds are better, but is it quicker overall? For example, comparing one 16GB DDR5 6000MHz stick in single channel versus two 8GB DDR4 3600MHz sticks in dual channel. Is the DDR5 still the faster option?
Assuming a solid package for both, around 5600 CL36 with 2x16GB for DDR5 and 3200 CL16 with 2x8GB for DDR4, the DDR4 package offers better latency performance. Most other aspects favor DDR5, and in most tests DDR5 leads. If you want deeper insight, fine-tuning timing on both packages will further boost DDR5’s latency advantage, though a well-balanced dual-rank DDR4 kit will still outperform. Reducing DDR5’s bandwidth by splitting it into a single channel brings it down to that of a 3200 CL16 DDR4 package, but with much higher latency and slower overall performance. If you choose DDR5, opt for at least a 2x16GB configuration due to technical limitations; otherwise, sticking with DDR4 is usually more practical and cost-effective.
This is an absolutely great response and answered everything I wanted to know in much detail and more. Thank you for this
