I upgraded to a 12 900 K build with the 3090, both water-blocked. I installed DDR5 Trident Z9 6000MHz RAM. After reading about performance gains over DDR4, I wondered if returning it would be worth it. Since it’s still under warranty, should I trade it in for DDR4 and save around $400? Because I spent $600 on this RAM, the cost of a 32GB gaming kit seems less important. There are many options, but given the high-end nature of this setup, the price shouldn’t be a big deal. Also, Windows 11 doesn’t penalize DDR4 in that version.

What are your return terms? If you have roughly a month before returning (about a month), hold on and stay until DDR5 improvements are made. They’ll likely adjust to make better use of the new speeds. Otherwise, it really depends on what you need. You might spend the funds on a different item—like a fresh monitor or a new keyboard. The choice is yours. I wish you success in finding what works for you!

Your motherboard only accepts DDR5, which means you can't switch to a better option. There aren't any significant benefits to using DDR5 at the moment.

You have the option to bring both the RAM and the motherboard together, or you can wait for BIOS updates and hardware enhancements before making any changes. If budget is a concern, I’d suggest bringing both. It’s still new, the price feels high, and it hasn’t shown its full potential yet. Performance will improve over time as parts become more efficient and upgrades are introduced. Right now, you’re essentially testing the waters to see how things develop. This model is very new, so many software programs aren’t optimized for it yet. It’s similar to the early days of RTX graphics cards—initially limited and imperfect, but eventually becoming much better as technology advanced.
