DRD4 will likely become obsolete for 1080p gaming in the near future as newer technologies emerge and older standards are phased out.

Probably not. It doesn't matter much. The graphics card and the needs of the games are what count. You can run a classic Intel Q6600 with 8 GB DDR2 and a good card for solid 1080p performance. Some titles won't work because those processors lack certain instructions like SSE4 or AVX, but others will still function well. You can stick with an older model—like a 2nd or 3rd generation Intel CPU with DDR3—paired with a decent card and you'll get solid gaming. I own an AMD FX-8320 with an RX 570 and 4 GB VRAM, playing at 1920x1200 in high ultra at 40-60 fps. Lowering the settings to medium-high lets me hit over 60 fps on most modern titles.
