Dawn of War 2 released in 2020 for PC and consoles.
I've played Dawn of War II since it was released in 2009 and at the time my GeForce 9800 GTX was struggling to play the game at my monitor's 1680x1050 resolution (It was great at the time!). It's been a hot minute and I don't still have that PC but if memory serves, it was a Core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, and they 9800 GTX. I'm sure there were better rigs at the time, but it was pretty sweet. I re-installed DoW II recently for a trip down memory lane and... damn! This game still looks great today. Obviously a lot of things have changed. My present gaming rig is a lot more modern (i7-9700k, 32GB RAM, 1080ti, NVMe SSD, etc) so I figured the overall experience would be significantly improved. In many ways it is: The 1080ti continues to be an absolute beast and manages to push 100+ FPS at 1440p (not quite the 165Hz my monitor can drive, but still respectable). Now... to achieve this, I had to pull some shenanigans. The FE card had some gawd-awful cooling and throttled under this sort of load, so i replaced it with the Artic Accellero IV to keep it cool and reduce throttling. This worked great and the card stays cool enough to avoid throttling, but it's still toasty. Anyway. I avoided "upgrading" to the 20 series cards since the 2080ti actually performed worse than the 1080ti in some games, and since none of the games that interested me made use of the RT features it would have been a lateral move if not a slight downgrade. But it's almost 2021 and the 3000 series cards are kind of a reality now and I am thinking about picking one up. But before I do I was hoping to hear from the community here. Is the 3080 actually a step up from the 1080 if you're not using ray tracing? I'll still be gaming at 1440p and targeting 165+ FPS, which the 1080ti falls just shy of. Is there anyone out there with a 3080 still playing Dawn of War II, lol?
