Hey there, I recently put together a PC for a friend and used one of my SSDs during an upgrade to NVMe. Usually I get around 500mb/s, but after swapping it in, it only reaches 5 to 10 mb/s max. I ran benchmarks and formatted it several times while troubleshooting the issue. The performance changed depending on the OS (Windows & Manjaro) and BIOS settings I used, which I didn’t document. The specs are: Mobo: Gigabyte micro ATX B450M CPU: Ryzen 2600 SSD: PNY Optima 240gb (SSD7SC240GSA-OPM). I’ll be there Tuesday to check things out. My notes so far:
- Test another SATA drive
- Try an NVMe if SATA isn’t working
- Any suggestions anyone has?

Her boot drive connects via SATA, likely the standard interface. Speeds are generally solid for modern drives, but older cables restrict performance. Ensure the storage mode is configured to AHCI in the BIOS settings. Consider testing with different cables if you have an older connection.

Hey there, thanks for checking. I used both the SATA cables that came with the motherboard (likely 6Gbps) and the three unblocked SATA ports on the motherboard. If the cable were the issue, speeds shouldn't drop to just 5-10mb/s.

The boot/main drive was an older formatted SSD. The only one we needed to check at that time was the following drive.

Consider disconnecting all other drives and attempt to start a Linux distribution like Ubuntu using a USB stick. Check the SSD for any performance shifts after removing other components. Also, think about aligning your partitions—details available online.

After Windows highlighted this problem, I switched to Manjaro, a lightweight Arch-based system to check if the issue was related to high disk usage in Windows. Even when all drives were disconnected, GParted reported speeds between 5-10MB/s during main partition tests. This became noticeable during installation and formatting on the machine itself, which took a long time to format and create an ext4 partition. I plan to follow the steps you provided, though I’m not very optimistic. Formatting, partitioning, and benchmarking worked perfectly on my Manjaro laptop.

Update the motherboard BIOS and SSD firmware using Sandisk's SSD Dashboard. If a SATA controller fails, test multiple SSDs to determine compatibility.
