It functions perfectly! I wasn't sure how I actually brought it back to life, but after moving the sticks in a random pattern and finally arranging them in an unusual sequence, it started working. I configured the XMP 2400MHz 1.65v profile, and it booted too. The memory layout from left to right (closest to CPU first) is: 4GB, 8GB, 8GB, 4GB... only this arrangement allowed me to load everything. Interestingly, both BIOS and HWInfo 64 recognize it as "Dual-Channel," and the Cinebench R20 improved from around 1750 to about 1820 on a 3.6GHz processor with TurboBoost. I’m planning more tests. --- And so far it worked! Played a game of GTA5 Online, except for one brief drop in frames—nothing more noticeable. My VRAM usage stays well within limits. Is my main memory bus now faster than the GPU’s? Could this be some kind of trick to boost performance on CrossFireX and hit 60 FPS? What mysterious technique is this?
@Kyeno Hey that's some good news! Thanks for the updates! Correct, the M.2 bandwidth is from the chipset, and does not use any PCI-E lanes from the CPU. M.2 were through the chipset up until 11th Gen CPUs. As for the Spectre / Meltdown patches, I think I did exactly what you did. Blocked / did not install the specific patches. I didn't care too much, as it was a secondary PC, for mostly offlinework, and gaming. That is weird that you had to use a 4GB - 8GB - 8GB - 4GB configuration. Even in the MSi Z97 Gaming 5 manual, they instruct you to use alternating slots. Are you maintaining a more stable FPS now? Has your average and/or mini FPS improved?
