Based on the situation, it seems you're considering a fresh OS setup rather than a repair. You might want to use an installation disk for a clean start. Let me know what steps you took before this happened.

I just got here at the university. I already have a lot of software installed. Everything began when I tried to update Windows (I won’t do it again). After rebooting, the screen went black—probably because of a graphics driver issue. I managed to restore the system, but it reported an error saying the restore failed. From then on, I faced a few minor problems: some apps wouldn’t start, installers had trouble with registry permissions, and I even messed up the registry while trying a specific app. I had a backup, but importing it failed with an error: data couldn’t be written because of system locks or lack of permissions.

You might recover it using a Windows installation disk, or you can run the System File Checker at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833. Although it isn't ideal, if your system is severely damaged, reinstalling might be the safer option to prevent future problems.

I managed to resolve the issue somewhat. I used the automatic system restore on Win8 (alt+f10 at startup), which seems to have fixed things. However, there are still problems—Windows Defender isn<|pad|>, and my Windows isn’t activating properly. It might be due to authentication issues with the servers. I edited this note after confirming everything is now working.
