Hello everyone, I'm setting up my first build. I'm thinking about buying a Ryzen 3950x and an RTX 2080 Super, paired with an MSI x570 Meg Ace. I have some questions: 1) which cooler should I choose? 2) are liquid coolers dependable and how long do they last? 3) with this CPU and GPU setup, could there be a bottleneck? I recently assembled a 4K to 8K Adobe Premiere editing station with the 3950x and 2080 Super graphics cards, using a Noctua NH-D15 for cooling. There have been no problems so far. If you're just building a gaming setup, the 3950X is more than sufficient and offers good value. For a high-performance gaming rig, opt for an i9-9900K, while the 3600 provides excellent performance at a reasonable price.
This would likely require a powerful machine for both gaming and production tasks, but if your main focus is gaming, consider models with 3700x or 3800x specifications. Save funds to upgrade components like faster RAM, a better GPU, or dual NVMe drives depending on your needs. For gaming combined with streaming, the 3900x offers sufficient CPU threads unless your setup involves heavy streaming complexity. If you're eager and confident, go ahead—I’m using the Dark Rock Pro 4 with my 3900x, which performs well but needs hardware tweaks for optimal mounting pressure. Tower coolers tend to be more reliable, with fewer failure points; replacing fans is straightforward and helps maintain stable temperatures. Many all-in-one coolers have proven dependable over time. A 240mm or 280mm radiator would suffice for these processors, though a 360mm model appeals to me. In gaming, the CPU (3800x, 3900x, 3950x) won’t significantly limit GPU performance unless you’re using very high refresh rates on low resolutions. Some software might also struggle with certain architectures.
Impressive, I started by checking it against my 9900k for Adobe and workstation jobs—it handled well. I plan to try it in some games tomorrow just for fun. It’s meant strictly for Adobe Premiere and won’t be used for gaming, according to the person I’m working with. If gaming is your main goal, the 9900k is likely a better choice.
Thanks for the update. I wasn't familiar with the bottle neck part either. I've always dreamed of creating a top-tier rig! As a grad student, I'm still saving up and hoping to finally assemble something powerful once I get back on track. Reading all the reviews about the 3950x really impressed me. If I manage this build, I'll be able to pay off my debt for at least six months.
It looks like you're excited about this tool! It'll be handy for gaming, rendering, deep learning, and 3D modeling. I used to prefer 9900k before discovering 3950x, but now I really like it. I'm based in Philly and think it's smart to head to Delaware to grab the parts and cut costs. You might save around $2300 without the monitor.
