The change is about using the switch as the connection point instead of looping through NICs directly.

They remain within the same L2 domain when connected through a 10G switch that stays left unconfigured, enabling direct communication. Otherwise, if the PCs are linked directly and their second ports connect to a 1GbE switch, you must set up a distinct subnet so Windows recognizes the correct interface for traffic routing. Additionally, in your initial comment, consumer router "LAN" ports are tied to a switch chip, meaning devices staying in the same subnet won’t experience performance drops on the router since the CPU isn’t processing it—only the ASIC does.

Seems like you're a bit behind on network structures.

Your Wi-Fi access point is positioned very close to the router in the connection path. The router offers four LAN ports; connect it straight to the router instead of using a switch.
