But, yes, you're correct. The goal was to include a boot drive with mostly applications, and a quick secondary drive for games/data.
Separating the OS from everything is beneficial when a drive fails.
HDD is slow. Mechanical drives are more prone to failure than SSDs. SSDs have no moving parts. Game load times are significantly slower compared to even an SATA SSD.
