Crash occurs exclusively when GPU utilization is elevated.
Hello, I’m reaching out today because I’m facing an issue with my system. I really hope you can assist me in resolving this. I’m not particularly skilled at setting up or repairing computers, but I’ve assembled and upgraded my machine since 2016 and built several different PCs for friends and family. I suspect I’m identifying the faulty parts, but maybe I’m mistaken. My main problem is that I can’t play any games which push my GPU to near full capacity. If my GPU reaches over 90% usage for a few minutes (up to 60 seconds), the game crashes with a black screen. In most titles, there are no error messages. However, in Titanfall 2 I encounter the error code: "dxgi_error_device_hung". Right now it’s not too bothersome since I mostly play CS2 with friends, where my CPU limits the GPU performance (40-70% max). But sometimes I prefer games that demand higher GPU power. If I lower my frame rate, the GPU usage stays low and everything works properly! Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Updated drivers
- Used older driver versions
- Running Windows 10 & 11 (no Linux)
- Installed Windows for Scratch
- Replaced GPU and PSU with new parts
- Used different Power PCIE cables from my PSU
- Checked temperatures: GPU max 80°C, CPU max 57°C under full load.
My specs are:
- Ryzen 7 2700X
- 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (Crucial Ballistix)
- Gigabyte Aorus B450 M
- Fractal Design Celsius+ S24 Prisma
- inno3d GTX 1080 i chill x3
- Power Plan 9, 600W
- SSD: Samsung EVO Plus M.2, 2x Kingston 480GB SSD, 1x WD 1TB HDD
From these observations, it seems my GPU or PSU might be the issue. I’m planning to test it in a friend’s PC to see if the behavior repeats there. For now, I’m limited to this setup.
Please keep in mind that my system has worked well for years with this configuration, and the problem started only a few months ago. What bothers me is that after reinstalling Windows it functions normally for about a week, even when using the GPU at full capacity. After that, the same issue resurfaces. I’m considering upgrading either the GPU or PSU, but I don’t feel the need right now since my current setup performs adequately for my needs.
Apologies for any unclear English—I’m not a native speaker, but I gave my best. Thank you very much for your help!
It's possible the thermal paste has dried on your GPU, leading to overheating and shutdowns. If temperatures reach around 80°C, it should still function, though the PSU is more likely to fail. Even if it works occasionally, its capacity might be insufficient for maximum GPU usage or voltage may drop slightly under heavy load. Many retailers let you buy a replacement PSU and get a full refund (check beforehand), making it the simplest option to try.
Thanks for the brief reply. I updated my GPU thermal paste in summer 2022 because it was overheating a lot. I plan to use the refund option. The benefit is that in my country, stores are required to accept returned items within 14 days without any questions.
Looking for a budget PSU under 120€ that’s reliable? I’ve got some options to consider.
Based on my experience, Corsair delivers excellent items and the RM650 costs €84.90.
Not always. My system has a dying 2080 GPU right now. It runs fine until VRAM loads, then it crashes and loses display signal. Everything else works normally. I tested with a VRAM checker and swapped GPUs, and the issue stayed consistent across different machines. @Tammo1 Consider using tools like memtestg80 for further analysis. https://github.com/ihaque/memtestG80
Yea, Corsair RM/x650 works well... Bequiet Pure Power might also fit (priced at 55 euros). I previously had the Pure Power 10.5 kW, which could handle my 3070 without trouble... However, it seems the system power PSU is questionable, so you should probably swap it out.
