Reflecting on my initial PC setup, I aimed to boost my CPU performance, which led me to purchase a 2700X. At that time, new automatic overclocking utilities were released and received favorable online feedback, suggesting they often outperform manual attempts for beginners. I decided to give it a try. Looking back, I used the ASUS EZ Overclocker, which reported a modest improvement—around 10% from stock performance. However, it failed to locate my other drives; only my M.2 boot drive appeared. Despite this, the system still ran, but I couldn’t access any of my external storage devices. The problem persisted until I restored my BIOS to factory settings. Now, years later, I’m puzzled by the issue. Why would faster CPU speeds cause drives to disappear? My current specs show a ROG STRIX X470-I motherboard, and I still don’t understand how a quicker processor interacts with SATA ports.

These auto overclockers tend to fail quickly, so it makes sense if that’s the case. You could try overclocking manually or avoid it altogether. The issue usually stems from excessive voltage or unstable auto settings, which can speed up CPU wear. Often the problem appears when storage devices vanish during overclocking, likely because the BCLK was increased too much. This isn’t typical for these automatic OC tools, though a clock generator on the board might have pushed the BCLK high enough to halt initialization.
