CPU voltage issue on skylake
I was attempting to boost my processor today and all temps stayed low, reaching 4.7ghz at 1.5V then jumping to 4.8ghz with 1.6V before the benchmark app crashed. BSOD Driver IRQL not less or equal. I checked online guides for overclocking the i7-6700k and found some tips suggesting 4.8ghz at 1.4V with an air cooler. I own a Swifttech water cooler and wonder why I can't match their results.
Frying that CPU is the idea. Suggested peak voltage for optimal cooling: 1.35v. For standard 240 (120x2) liquid cooling setups, aim for 1.42v. With high-end 360 (120x3) liquid cooling, target around 1.45v. Most users receive early engineering chips, which usually perform better when overclocked than regular models. Keep in mind, each CPU reacts differently—overclocking is largely a matter of chance. Check the first article linked in the GeekBench chart for more details.
Going to fry that CPU.
Best voltage for good air cooling: 1.35v
Best voltage with common 240 (120x2) liquid cooling: 1.42v
Best voltage with 360 (120x3) liquid cooling: 1.45v
Most users receive early engineering chips. These usually perform better at overclocking than regular retail models.
Also, no two CPUs overclock identically. A lot depends on luck. Check the first article linked in the GeekBench chart.
You managed to keep your CPU below 1.6v... It's a good sign, it's still alive. Check out Leaps' article for more cooling tips.
Intel states the maximum voltage is 1.52. You're taking a risk by going beyond that.

You're going to fry that CPU.
Best voltage for good air cooling: 1.35v
Best voltage with standard 240 (120x2) AIO liquid cooling: 1.42v

Most reviewers receive early engineering samples. These usually overclock more than regular CPUs.

Well then, I'm stupid. I just tried 4.8ghz at 1.43v and it worked perfectly. Probably I went too high. That was close.
