CPU temperature changes a lot even when not running fast, despite a high clock speed.
Details: Ryzen 7 3700X with GTX 980 Ti, Asus crosshair v8 hero am4, motherboard with 32GB RAM, Corsair Vengeance RGB, NXT Kracken X63, 280mm AIO, Fractal design meshify S2, Corsair iQUE QL140 RGB fans. Temperature swings between 49°C and 69°C. Built on April 27th, with all components except the graphics card. Looking for possible reasons behind the instability.
My configuration stood out from others using Ryzen chips because temperatures stayed within a calm range. I wasn’t aware of Ryzen’s strong clock control, but with a solid water cooler, idle temps shouldn’t spike much. When looking at similar builds, the CPU never got excessively hot during idle and temperature swings were minimal.
I explored further options. Certain monitoring tools check idle cores, while others like HW Monitor seem to only display the most recent CPU temperature, which limits their precision. This applies mainly to the newest Ryzen 3000 models, possibly affecting other upcoming Ryzen CPUs. Ryzen Master by AMD offers a more reliable reading since it doesn’t poll or show last known temperatures. My current idle temps sit around 44°C to 46°C, which aligns with what I’ve noticed about this generation.
