CPU surges immediately to 100 degrees and cooling slows under load during stress tests
Hello everyone, I'm just starting this project by taking apart a working CPU from a friend. Right now I'm experiencing sudden throttling during stress tests, even though my idle temps are normal. When I run Prime95 with smaller FFTs, the temperature spikes to 90-100°C and the CPU slows down. I've attached the relevant WHinfo graphs (full CSV included).
My setup details: CPU – Intel Core i7-4790K, cooler – DARK ROCK 4 with Arctic MX4 paste, motherboard – GIGABYTE Z97-D3H-CF, BIOS – latest, RAM – 32GB (8GB×4), memory controller – GSkill F3-2133C10-8GSR, running at 2133 MHz xmp profile, PSU – Thermaltake smart 700W, GPU – ASUS RTX 2070 SUPER EVO OC, SSD – 256GB S3C, HDD – 2TB Toshiba DT01ACA200, OS – Windows 10 x64 22H2.
I've changed coolant twice and applied new MX-4 paste in a cross pattern, but the problem still occurs with every installation. Could you help figure out what's causing this? Any suggestions on further testing would be appreciated! Thanks a lot.
After reinstalling the cooler, the BIOS might have restarted, potentially erasing earlier fan settings.
the fans are positioned to work together, and stress tests push the CPUs beyond typical levels so you can experiment with other tasks. if it doesn’t trigger any throttling, everything should be okay.
I'll review the bios fan curves now. The CPU fan curve is set to normal. The fan speed is approximately 1300 rpm. Are you referring to the cooler's mounting on the CPU socket or the backplate of the cooler on the motherboard? I haven't adjusted it yet, but it seems all screws are secure. It's possible the rear fan was installed incorrectly. Currently I'm directing air into the fins (pull) and pushing it out through the case (push). Should the CPU fan direct air into the fins or away from them? I can't install it on the RAM side due to space constraints.
