CPU speed decreases when workload increases on HP laptop
I'm really frustrated because I've looked into everything online and tried all the fixes. I updated my BIOS, installed the core temp app to check for thermal problems, but it doesn't help. When I run heavy apps or games, the GPU stays at 3 GHz and then drops instantly to 1.7 GHz, causing a big drop in FPS. I've applied every driver update and turned on Turbo Boost, but the issue persists. My laptop has an Intel i7-5500U CPU at 2.40GHz with 8GB RAM.
Hey there! It looks like you're dealing with a thermal problem. I suggest taking the laptop apart and removing any dust, then reapplying thermal paste. 5th generation Intel laptops from HP are usually easy to work on. Adding 16GB of RAM would also be beneficial if you can afford it.
Take the laptop open and replace the CPU and GPU if needed. Open Device Manager and remove items like dptf or dynamic tuning processor participant since they cause throttling. Navigate to ThrottleStop, turn it on, enter TPL, set turbo long, short, and pp0 to 9999999, then apply clamp and lock settings. Go to Options to check if chipset throttling can be disabled. Also consider using the FiveFinger menu to slightly undervolt the CPU.
