CPU remains at 4.5ghz (overclocking)
CPU remains at 4.5ghz (overclocking)
Hi there,
I'm trying to get my CPU pasted 4.5ghz. However it seems like it doesnt work. Now mind you, the computer does not crash or something like that, it simply won't allow me to get beyond 4.5ghz (setting it to for example 4.8ghz in the bios it just ignores that and makes it 4.5ghz)
First I thought my computer was ignoring the 4.8ghz in bios because it wasnt getting enough voltage to set the cpu to 4.8ghz. But even at 1.4v it still doesnt apply the 4.8ghz.
I'm sure it's some sort of power setting in my bios. However I cant seem to find any setting like that.
CPU: i7 7700k
Mobo: Gigabyte Gaming K3 (Z270)
Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
Temps running at 4.5ghz is 55-60c during a stresstest and 35c during IDLE.
Edit: Seems like the problem is the turbo boost. If I enable it, it will only follow what the turbo boost is set to. If I disable it, it will still follow the last used settings on the turbo boost. Example:
Setting the cpu manually to 4.8ghz, but leaving turbo boost disabled at stock speeds (45ghz) will make the CPU run at 4.5ghz.
Setting the cpu manually to 4.8ghz, and disabling turbo boost will still run the CPU at 4.5ghz because that is what the tubo boost was set to.
If I set the turbo boost to 4.8ghz, and then disabling it OR enabling it, that is what my CPU will run at.
What the heck? I'm so confused.
It might be a bit odd in the bios, but you can always adjust the multiplier to 45 and change the clock settings for those numbers to 106 or 107, which should give you a solid 4.8 result.
It seems like you're wondering about the trade-offs of using a high turbo boost setting. Are you curious about the potential drawbacks of just sticking to 4.8 and not adjusting other parameters? You're also asking for a comparison of performance improvements. It looks like you're considering whether manual tuning offers better results compared to auto settings.
There isn't any significant negative aspect either direction. It was simply providing a method for what you intended to achieve initially.

There's no major downside either way. Just was giving you a way to do what you wanted originally
Yeah I appreciate that! Unless there's a big downside of using turbo boost, I will probably use that instead.
Thanks anyway!

Question from spree01 : "Can't overclock without turbo boost"

Hi there,
I made a new post because I'm really confused. I hope it's okay.
So basically yesterday I found out that I can't overclock without my turbo boost, let me explain what I mean by this:
Setting the CPU manually to 4.8ghz, but leaving turbo boost disabled at stock speeds (4.5ghz) will make the CPU run at 4.5ghz.
Setting the CPU manually to 4.8ghz, and disabling turbo boost will still run the CPU at 4.5ghz because that is what the tubo boost was set to.
So basically, I can't overclock without changing the turbo boost frequency. Even disabling turbo boost will make my chip run at whatever the turbo boost is set to.
Now I have two choices here, either just overclock with turbo boost, setting my ghz at 4.8ghz via turbo boost, or 2: try and get help from someone that knows more than me.
I can't seem to find ANY posts about this problem. I have already tried updating bios, downgrading bios, installing drivers, changing a bunch of settings, NOTHING have worked so far.
Any help is appreciated!
I told you how to do it yesterday. Read that post

MERGED QUESTION
Question from spree01 : "Can't overclock without turbo boost"
spree01 :
Hey, I wrote a new message because I'm still puzzled. I’m sure it’s fine.
Yesterday I discovered that I can’t overclock without using the turbo boost, here’s what I understand:
If you manually set the CPU to 4.8ghz but keep the turbo boost off at its default speed (4.5ghz), the CPU will run at 4.5ghz.
If you set it to 4.8ghz and turn off the turbo boost, it will still run at 4.5ghz because that’s what the turbo was configured for.
So, I’m stuck—overclocking means changing the turbo boost frequency. Even turning it off just lets the chip run at whatever turbo setting is active.
Now I have two options: either overclock with turbo boost, set my speed to 4.8ghz via turbo, or try to ask someone more experienced for advice.
I haven’t found any discussions about this issue. All my attempts—updating bios, downgrading, installing drivers, tweaking settings—have failed so far.
Anyone have a solution? I tried reading the post from yesterday and would prefer fixing it instead of using another workaround.
There are various methods to increase CPU speed. Most people do it in the opposite way.
