Dear Forum Members, A friend of mine needed to clean and reapply his CPU (PGA type) for a Ryzen 5 1500X. The CPU and cooling block came off together with the socket when it was closed, thanks to the very dry paste. After reinstalling, the PC doesn’t show BIOS or any status while the motherboard’s LED indicates a CPU problem. The main question is: how can we determine if the CPU or the socket is damaged? He intends to take it to a repair shop, but I was hoping you could offer some advice. (Please find the photos attached, sorry about the low quality.) From what he described, the CPU pins appear fine (no bending), but I’m not 100% sure from the picture. (He can’t test it on another board or vice versa.) Edit: It seems the real issue is that the PC doesn’t work after repasting and reinstalling the same CPU back to the same motherboard.
AMD chips are easy to handle. Gently grasp the edge and twist to release it without much trouble. Make sure you hold it securely so that when it breaks free from the thermal paste, you don’t drop it and harm the pins. The CPU will still function as long as the pins remain intact.
Happened to me too; paste didn’t look old. Looks like a typical problem with Ryzen, possibly due to large dies and poor retention. I also bent pins during that time, so check sides carefully to confirm.
Thanks for your input. Since you're not close to the person who built this PC, it's tricky to understand what's happening. The PINs on the CPU seem fine, but when everything was assembled, the system stopped working and the motherboard displayed an error about the CPU. Could it be that the socket was permanently damaged, even though the pins look okay?
