CPU performance concerns on this system: i5-12600k with Fractal Design Lumen S24
Hey there, I've noticed my PC has become noticeably warmer and louder lately. It started when the fans kicked up during Phasmophobia games, especially when opening or closing Chrome tabs. Usually, my system stays around 40-60°C while playing, which isn't hot at all. The game didn’t seem affected before a couple of weeks ago. I think the CPU temperature jumps about +10°C just by switching tabs, and it’s paired with really loud fan noise from the front case. My SpeedFan shows idle temps between 25-30°C, while Armoury Crate records around 47°C.
My specs are: CPU i5-12600k, GPU ASUS TUF 3060 Ti, PSU Corsair RM750, Mobo B660M-PLUS, WIFI D4, and a Fractal Design Lumen S24 RGB cooler. To check the temps during gameplay, I played a League ARAM match and logged CPU readings on SpeedFan and package temps in Armoury Crate. Only Discord, SF, AC, and League were open.
During the match, after about four minutes SF reported CPU temps between 42-52°C, and AC logged the package temp at 69°C. Fans stayed loud for most of the game. At around seven minutes SF noted temps from 43-46°C, AC showed 71°C. By seven and a half minutes SF recorded 64°C, then it climbed steadily to 45-56°C, AC reached 71°C, and by 16 minutes it was at 71°C again. After 18 minutes SF logged 47-58°C, AC stayed around 75°C.
It seems the temps kept rising throughout the game. Games like Apex are even more alarming, often hitting mid-80°C, so I wasn’t sure if this was normal. Fan speeds changed a lot during intense moments with Apex and other titles, which is odd. I don’t have a clear answer, but it’s definitely unusual.
The heat I feel at the top of the case mostly comes from where the tubes connect to the radiator (and also from the pump). About 70-80% of that warmth is near the radiator, while the rest is in the pump. There’s a noticeable whine from the AIO pump, though some say that’s typical. Also, the pump is inside the radiator, right in the middle of the right side fan area. This placement might be part of the problem. I’m thinking about moving the radiator to the front of the case, but I’m not sure what that would mean for airflow or fan usage.
I’d appreciate any tips or advice on how to fix this before it affects my gaming experience. Keeping my PC in good shape is important, especially since these temperatures weren’t usual before. Thanks! TL;DR: My system is getting hotter during games, especially Phasmophobia and League of Legends, and the AIO setup might be contributing.
Progressing smoothly by placing it at the beginning. Status updated as resolved pending further steps.
CPU performed well for a month without any temperature or noise issues. Now it's overheating during mid to high loads—around 79°C at 15% load in Bloons TD6. The radiator isn't hot, but the tubes are. You might want to contact Fractal Design support for further assistance.
I don’t have a fix for you, but I just wanted to note that I’m facing the same issue. My S36 Lumen stayed cool at 5600x initially, but now it’s having trouble keeping under 95°C in Dota 2 or StarCraft 2, especially after heavy undervolting. AMD shared this chart for temperature worries, though it hasn’t matched my recent experience. Please let me know if you have any new info https://i.imgur.com/vgRsY4p.jpg
Wow, I have the same problems too! My Lumen RGB S24 is inside a Ryzen 7 5700x with an SSUPD cooling setup. PBO was enabled before, but the issue began about five days ago. My PC was assembled in May 2022. I assumed the problem was from applying thermal paste, but after redoing everything—turning off overclocking, setting BIOS to default, adjusting vcore to 1.2v—I’m still seeing 96°C after 30 minutes! It’s throttling noticeably; I no longer get 4.6GHz and often it drops below 1GHz during games. Restarting the BIOS would trigger a temperature warning. I also noticed the radiator isn’t warm anymore, though the pump readings say it runs at 4k RPM. I’m planning to switch to an AIO cooler while testing Fractal support for the warranty claim.
Awkwardusername, my rad didn't get hot anymore either. I bought two Lumen S36 RGB units in September 2021, one had a severe blockage causing overheating and shutdowns, which was alleviated by moving the pc around a lot, but who knows, it may come back. With the second unit, I could feel flow in the tubes but one was noticably hotter than the other and no amount of reorienting the case while running/disassembly and blockage clearing would help, so finally I had to RMA it. Not sure if that could be a pump issue even though the pump sensor still claimed it was running fine. Both of these units had been spotty or gradually degrading in performance in that 11 month span, hopefully the replacement does better. Currently using the 5600x stock cooler with an undervolt of -24 in PBO2 and fully maxed SC2/Dota 2/Warzone and more doesn't put a dent in it, topping out at ~80c with averages well below that. Maybe there are some lingering QC issues considering the Lumen is a newer product? FD support has thus far been great, hopefully you guys have the same experience.
I recently purchased a CORSAIR iCUE H100i RGB PRO XT. Unfortunately, the latest readings were recorded during intense gaming sessions. It’s clearly much cooler than expected. Also worth mentioning is that I removed the Aspect fans—they look nice, but Fractal probably had a better reason.
I've faced the same issue recently. I'm using a 5700x with a Fractal Lumen S24. It worked fine yesterday, but since this morning my temps jumped to 65-75°C when idle and reached 90-91°C under load. I purchased it in April. I changed fan headers and heard the pump start up when plugged in, but the problem returned right after booting. The pump and radiator stayed cool despite warm tubes. It's a shame because before that, I had to replace my Deepcool Castle 240 due to noise and poor performance under load after almost a year.
Great start on the thread! It sounds like your setup has been stable for a while, but recent temperature trends are causing concern. You're already aware of the pump noise and the odd rattling you hear near the tubing connection when you crank it up. That could be a sign of internal issues. Since you haven’t tried repasting yet, it might be worth keeping an eye on the situation before making a change. If things don’t improve, reaching out for a replacement unit would be a smart move.
