CPU overheats above 80°C during startup in BIOS—screen won’t open to boot options
Hello all! I'm running into a pretty big issue with my newly built PC. My CPU temps during startup and all the way into the BIOS are extremely high (85-90 °C), causing a high CPU temp error. On top of that, even though I have the AIO's pump speed connector plugged into my CPU_FAN header on my MOBO, I'm getting another error saying that I have no CPU cooler plugged in and the RPM for the CPU_FAN reads 0. That said, the lights on the AIO come on just fine and the fans spin freely. In fact, after the PC has been turned on, all of the fans spin up to max RPM and the lights on the fans and pump head in my case begin to flash red (which I assume is another indicator of high CPU temp). It appears that these BIOS errors are preventing me from selecting a boot drive although all of my drives are being recognized in the BIOS screen. At first I thought that this issue was due to the AIO's pump head being badly seated on the CPU's heat spreader but after waiting a week for new thermal paste to come in so I could take the pump off, check the amount of contact between the CPU and cooler, and reinstall in properly, I ended up taking my pump off to see that it had made plenty adequate contact with the heat spreader the entire time. This is when I really started to become worried, as now I'm unsure if this is an issue with my CPU itself, with the Corsair AIO's pump, or with the temperature sensors on the MOBO. I decided to reinstall the pump after applying new, likely better thermal compound just to see if my issue would at all be solved. Alas, I'm running into the same exact issue with the new paste and reinstalled pump. I took every step to make sure that the pump was installed with even pressure, going in a criss-cross pattern when tightening the thumb screws and all. Has anyone ever experienced this particular issue? I'd really like to believe that the pump has failed as it would be fairly easy to get a replacement from Best Buy, but I'm really not sure how to test if the pump is actually pumping. Like I said earlier, all of the LEDs some on so it seems like it's working, but perhaps the LEDs could be functioning while the pump itself is not? I'd appreciate any suggestions or help! My specs are as follows: Intel Core i7 12700k Asus ROG Strix x690 MOBO 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5 5600 Corsair H150i Elite Capellix 360mm
I paid attention during the initial phase before the fans reached full speed to detect the pump sound. It sounded noticeably softer than my previous Corsair H105, maybe even silent. I wasn't certain if my doubts were misplaced; it's possible the H150i pump is naturally quiet. I also checked for physical vibrations but only felt the fans spinning at maximum speed. Overall, I suspect a pump-related problem.
I don’t own an H150i, so I can’t advise on the ideal volume. You might try connecting another fan to the CPU_FAN header to check if it receives a signal, though success is unlikely. Since I haven’t used any AIOs before, it seems a faulty pump is probably the issue. You’d likely want to test it with another system if possible.
I thought it was a little awkward saying this, but I believe it's still worth noting. While taking out all the fans and getting ready to swap my CPU cooler, I realized the pump plug wasn’t fully connected to the Commander fan controller. It was only enough to run the lights, not the pump. Thanks a ton for your support!
Ensure you verify your connections multiple times before proceeding!
Well I'm glad you found the solution! Words of wisdom my friend, words of wisdom. Anyway, enjoy your new PC!
