CPU overclocked automatically?
Hey there, I just recently upgraded some core parts of my computer. For the CPU, I got an AMD FX-6300 Black edition (unlocked). I was thinking about overclocking once I have a better cooling solution or liquid cooling, but not right away.
The problem is that after installing everything and starting CoreTemp, it shows my CPU reaching 4.2GHz, which is higher than the stock speed of 3.5GHz. This causes the fan to spin really fast because the temperatures go up a lot. I’m wondering if my CPU overclocked itself or if the motherboard drivers did something. If so, how can I reset it back to normal speeds?
Here are my system details:
- AMD FX-6300 Black
- MSI 980A Krait edition motherboard
- Radeon R7 260X
- 8GB Kingston HyperX Fury 1600 MHz RAM
- 550W CoolerMaster PSU (details not exact, but confirmed)
It's running at maximum speed and operates on a single core only when required. You have the option to disable it in the BIOS settings.

CountMike shared his experience about the turbo mode functioning on a single core only when required. He mentioned he can disable it in BIOS if desired. He asked where exactly in the BIOS it is located—specifically in the OC settings, but more precisely. He also noted that he finally discovered it after some searching and expressed gratitude. Now he no longer gets bothered by the fans running continuously.
