CPU Overclock Worth It For Gaming?
I own a Gigabyte x-99 5p i7 5960x AX1200i power supply with two 980Ti GPUs. I’m currently running the one that got an extra overclock, and I’m still figuring out if SLI is really useful for me. Right now I mainly play Apex Legends and BF5. I recently bought a new CPU cooler and have been experimenting with overclocking the GPU. With 1440 low settings, I’ve managed about 10-12 extra frames in BF5. Could overclocking the CPU help further? Is there any real benefit for my current usage?
it depends on the CPU (not sure about CPU architecture, hehe). A faster CPU usually means better performance. You'll notice this difference when comparing a regular CPU to one that's overclocked, particularly if you aim for more than 60 frames per second or higher.
On the battlefield I went from 58-62 frames to mid high 70s. My monitor is a decent 144Hz one, and as I keep learning I'm aiming for more. I enjoy mixing ideas from different time periods, both good and bad, while I wait to upgrade my CPU and GPU in a few months.
I need to check that program and see how it works. It’s still a bit unfamiliar on my PC, but it’s quite enjoyable. I was having stuttering problems in games, which might have been caused by an old H100i AIO. After switching to an air cooler, I haven’t seen any issues. The section I’m unsure about is where I’m looking right now.
Checking RTSS seems interesting, you think. Your knowledge is impressive. Hwinfo mentions an update but I'm unsure which link to follow. Do I need the game running for sensor data to be useful?
It looks like you installed Afterburner without the RTIV, since I didn't know what it was at that time. Should I remove MSI and then download both versions again? Also, should I reoverclock my GPU?
Don't worry about updating HWinfo, it doesn't impact older systems like yours or mine. Sensors work as a separate view that you can inspect without playing the game to see if the CPU is the issue. RTSS should be accessible on its own, especially from Guru3D.
