CPU on Dell Inspiron G5 5587 stuck at low temperature?
I got a Dell Inspiron G5 5587 from my brother who lives two hours away asking if I could repair it. He mentioned the built-in keyboard wasn’t working, but that’s been happening for a while now—he’s been using a Logitech keyboard on top of it for over a year. The biggest problem that still puzzles me is how slow the system runs. This isn’t an old machine with an 8750H processor and an NVMe SSD; it has 16GB of RAM, so there should be no reason for such sluggishness. I removed the motherboard from the case and had the display next to it for a visual check and multimeter testing while the system ran. The first thing that caught my attention was that when the system starts, it briefly spins up the fans and then displays the Dell logo—but that’s the only time the fans turn on. No matter how much I stress the system, the fans never activate. After opening AIDA64, the CPU reported 25°C, and individual cores were showing hotspots, but the temperature stayed steady. The CPU didn’t even exceed 0.79GHz. When I searched online, the only relevant post I found was on a link that received just one reply, which wasn’t very helpful, especially since it wasn’t a Ryzen-based machine. AIDA showed maximum core temperatures reaching 54°C, yet it didn’t report throttling. I captured screenshots of HWINFO, AIDA, and Task Manager during a synthetic load test (though only briefly). It seems like either the thermal sensor is faulty or the CPU is already damaged—just doesn’t realize it yet. I’m considering sharing this before telling my brother it’s beyond repair. What do you think?
