my pc has an i7 7700k CPU without overclocking. it comes with a cooler that wasn't enough, so i upgraded to a liquid cooler. i was worried it wouldn't handle the stock speeds, but even with extra fans it still reached high temps during games (80-85°C). after stress testing at prime95, temps stayed around 90°C for 15-20 minutes. i noticed voltage readings spiked up to 1.304V when bios set was 1.224V. this is puzzling—why does the CPU keep getting hotter? should i adjust the voltage settings in bios or check something else?
The video signal isn't what you should focus on; Vcore is more accurate, though finding the VR Vout (voltage controller output) is ideal. HWmonitor isn't reliable for this task—use HWinfo sensor mode instead. It's confusing why people keep using HWmonitor when HWinfo is clearly superior and free to use. For temperature readings, you might want to place notes underneath the IHS.
I've adjusted the thermal paste twice and replaced the cooler, yet everything worked well before. Now I'm planning to switch to SP fans and see how it affects performance. I'm still unsure which ones are better, so I'll start by changing the fans first, then the paste, and hopefully the cooler too. Regarding your question about HWMonitor, it's possible it isn't displaying accurate voltage readings.
VID represents the voltage the CPU expects, specifically VDD, but it doesn’t display the real voltage being measured right now.
Check the hardware details section for the information you need.
From this image I can just see the VID if you need CPU-Z; otherwise, HWINFO64 should display both the VDD and the VID.
