CPU Intensive Games
Witcher 3 demands significant GPU power yet remains capable of challenging the CPU.
GTA V (many gamers, complex physics) PlanetSide 2 (extremely many players, heavy physics) Internet MMORPGs with big player groups (huge numbers of players)
According to what I understand, current consumer CPUs can't maintain a frame rate above 30–40 in large multiplayer groups with hundreds of players. City: Skylines becomes noticeably slower as the player base grows significantly.
Supreme Commander established partnership with the Forged Alliance Forever mod. The game operates on a single core, and each trajectory for every shell laser and missile is precisely computed from thousands of units. It can push my 3570k to its limits when running at 4.8Ghz.
In CS:GO the performance isn't mainly due to heavy CPU usage, but rather limited GPU power. When your graphics card isn't strained, your CPU usually sets the frame rate limit. The problem stands out more in this game compared to others built on the Source engine since players often push it to unrealistic speeds that hit their hardware's limits.
