Felt nervous about that situation. It looks like something happens every five years—my PC shuts down unexpectedly, and I’m stuck upgrading to a newer machine. This time it might take longer than five years before I need another fix. Any advice on troubleshooting? Hopefully I can get it running again tonight; if not, it seems the upgrade is really necessary.
If the CPU is malfunctioning, it’s likely due to improper handling. We’ve all experienced this. This kind of equipment is swapped out before breakdowns occur. Make sure you identify the correct model—like 9900KF versus 9900K. Edited September 22, 2023 by leclod
It's a 9900K model, but the system won't even attempt to boot now. It doesn't try at all. I saw a video that reminded me of my shutdown problems. I tried updating the BIOS, but it stopped halfway—around 30%—so I reset the CMOS and retried. That worked once. Then another shutdown happened, and from then on there was no display, just a CPU light. Now I'm really concerned it might not power up at all, showing absolutely no response when I try to turn it on. Could it be the motherboard? I've handled the CPU carefully, but I did some things I'm ashamed of—like moving the TAI pump around while it was running during the first boot issue, because it felt too tight. I'm considering getting a cheap used 1151 socket board to test, or if that doesn't help, I might have to go with a 1700 model.
If I change the motherboard and CPU to a newer model, but later realize the i9 works fine, it’s not too bad—I actually need two PCs anyways. This situation just happened at the most inconvenient moment.
I’m pretty sure I damaged the motherboard because my first BIOS update didn’t work, and the second one succeeded but the PC shut down right after. I can still manage to boot it briefly using a screwdriver for a short time. Tomorrow I plan to rename my BIOS file to GIGABYTE.bin at work and see if I can force a QFLASH to save it, since this board doesn’t have a dedicated button like newer models do. I’m hoping it works, or at least try to test a used or budget LGA 1151 socket board to see if it boots. If that fails, I’ll upgrade to a more modern 1151 and still be able to run the i9 for a couple of years. It might be the 13th generation. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If you can keep updating the BIOS, it means you haven’t completely damaged the motherboard. However, I’m not happy with how you’re handling the CPU. Those seem a lot more problematic to me. And regarding the bent socket pins? Edited September 23, 2023 by leclod
