I'm quite new to understanding airflow. For my Cryorig M9 (AMD) tower/vertical cooler, I thought placing the fan in front of the RAM slots would push hot air through the rear exhaust fan. Is that a good idea?

Yes, it should blow through the cooler body and in the direction of the case exhaust or its fan.
