CPU configuration appears as dual-core despite being quad-core.

Hello everyone, I'm assembling a PC for my friend to enjoy League of Legends. I thought it wouldn't need much power, so I put together a system using parts from old computers and some items sent by subscribers. Everything functions properly and starts up easily. However, in the Core Temp and Task Manager it displays the CPU as a dual-core processor. My previous machine had an AMD A-8 6500 B which was listed as a quad-core, and the BIOS also shows that. I've tried adjusting settings and rearranging components without success. I'm feeling confused and concerned the CPU might not be operating at its full capacity. Anyone have any advice or should I be worried? Also, the BIOS seems current and all drivers are up to date.

Expected behavior given the four cores sharing many components, so certain applications appear as dual-core with four threads. Performance seems fine—no need to worry.

So far, the results appear accurate. I haven’t installed the graphics card yet, so I haven’t run any benchmarks. It was strange since it showed up properly in both the core temperature and task manager on my previous machine, but not here.

I also faced the same issue with this specific CPU, but don’t stress—it should work properly using all four cores as expected

I wouldn't have been so concerned if I had kept it, but handing it over to someone I didn't want to see things go wrong made me feel like I messed up.

Are you seeing four threads in Task Manager? Over time, changes due to lawsuits and scheduler adjustments can affect how CPUs display performance, sometimes showing two cores instead of four.

Piledriver chips are recognized for this behavior. Due to how CPU pairs in the Piledriver design share resources that each core normally handled alone, unexpected outcomes emerge. This likely accounts for why earlier Phenom II models excelled in computational tasks.
