Purchased the limited edition Linus Black Noctua when it launched and considered opting for a more affordable processor for my next build. I believe it would be a waste of the cooler, but saving that £100 could help with a monitor or similar upgrades. Right now I'm using a CPU six generations behind, aiming for the 9700k which would likely go well with a 2060 Super at the moment.
The 9700K pairs well with the NH-D15, but investing in Coffee Lake Refresh means missing out on a solid upgrade route compared to a 9900K. It’s unlikely to be a big deal since you’re only moving after six generations of processors. You might want a Ryzen 7 3700X if you don’t already have a compatible board, offering similar gaming performance with better multi-core speed for a lower price. Yes, the absence of an upgrade route stems from Intel shifting from LGA1151v2 to LGA1200. It makes sense not to wait for the next generation, as the performance boost won't be revolutionary. I believe the 9700K offers a solid balance and leaves space for future GPU improvements if you choose. For Z370/Z390 models, the available boards accommodate both 8th and 9th generation Intel CPUs.
