Hi everyone, just wanted to share the details. I recently upgraded my dying Pentinum 4 rig with a new CPU (Q9400) and a new motherboard featuring 6GB DDR2 667MHz RAM to support my current setup, which is on a tight budget. I also installed a nice Sapphire HD 7850 2GB OC Edition.

However, I've been noticing some CPU bottlenecks and feel like my GPU isn't reaching its full potential. I considered overclocking the Q9400, but it didn’t work as expected—it doesn’t OC properly, and I’ve tried a lot of other solutions. My question is, would switching to an overclockable motherboard improve performance and reduce this bottleneck? I plan to push my CPU to 3GHz to 3.2GHz.

Thanks a lot!

I estimate a gain of roughly 5 to 20 frames per second based on your overclock settings. If it justifies the effort, proceed.

I think it's better to save the money and upgrade the components like the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. That would give you significantly improved performance. I'm not sure what benefits overclocking would bring because the processor is quite old.

I would save the money and purchase a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM. That would give you significantly better performance. I’m not sure what performance boost you’d get from overclocking your CPU since it’s quite old. I know upgrading the system would work, but I can’t afford it right now because I don’t have the funds and I’m waiting until December to build. I built this one instead.

Haha, delaying the need for funds seems like the wisest option

KeelinTy explains the situation clearly, saying waiting longer for money is the best option. They mention their Q9400 HD 7850 is working okay in games and wonder if upgrading would help FPS. They note the new mobile phone costs only £30, which seems reasonable. Thanks for the update.
