While playing games my FPS drops sharply to around 10 (the whole system not just the game window) and both GPU and CPU usage vanish completely. I think there are two possible reasons but would appreciate a second look. Recently I downgraded to a 7800xt, which worked until today when I upgraded from an R5 2600 to an R9 5950x. I've performed several tests and it doesn’t seem to affect benchmark results either. However, my power supply is only 650 watts. I’ve already ordered an 850W one, but the GPU BRD PWR and CPU POWER both drop instantly. Anyone have other suggestions on what might be causing this?

I'm about to experiment with gaming using an undervolted GPU to check if power issues are the problem. Yet, even with a solid workload, the BRD PWR stays below 250 and the CPU runs at 107.

I understand temperature isn't the problem since both the GPU and CPU stay below 70. It might just be an outdated BIOS, so I can try updating it. The Asus Prime A320-MK is coming up soon, but I don't think the motherboard is the cause.

Looks like a power problem, but adjusting FPS with undervoltage doesn’t seem to cause any issues.

Thanks for the feedback. I just placed an order for a fresh case, new motherboard, and updated PSU—basically a completely new setup now!

Which board have you placed? Make sure it suits the 5950X. This CPU draws a lot of power, so stable voltage regulation is essential.

I used an ASUS B550-F gaming and it looks capable enough. I think upgrading to an AM5 board later should be a good idea, so spending on a 200+ AM4 motherboard isn’t necessary.
